GANADO Advocates hosts young lawyers on study tour from Erasmus University Rotterdam Published on October 27, 2016 A group of young lawyers from Erasmus University Rotterdam visited GANADO Advocates’ offices in Valletta on the 18th of October as part of a study tour to Malta and Piraeus, to gain experience of the maritime sector through a practical legal lens. The GANADO Advocates´ Shipping team provided an enthusiastic and appreciative audience with a tailored familiarisation visit and networking sessions as well as valuable insights to the department´s day-to-day work. In the practical workshop on seafarers by Dr Jotham Scerri-Diacono, Partner in the Shipping Department, the young lawyers were given an idea of the kinds of problems that have to be tackled through a case study on the arrest of a vessel and its effect on the crew. Dr Matthew Attard, Senior Associate within the same practice area, delivered a presentation on the Maritime Labour Convention and its application in the shipping world with a focus on the practical realities faced by seafarers and how the Convention is implemented and enforced by States. GANADO Advocates’ Shipping practice combines academic excellence and industry expertise, largely due to the foresight of its founder and former Dean, the late Professor Joe Ganado, who contributed to the creation of a unique legal framework which led Malta to becoming a major jurisdiction of choice in the maritime sector. The young lawyers and their mentors voiced their appreciation to the GANADO Advocates’ Shipping team for their warm and instructive welcome. Go back
