From Intern to Associate: Meet Luke Hili

Luke Hili started his journey with Ganado Advocates as an Intern in the summer of 2015 as part of Ganado Advocates’ summer internship programme. Now an Associate within Ganado Advocates’ insurance and capital markets practices, Luke walks us through his time as an intern and how it facilitated his growth that lead him to his current position within the firm.

From your own experience, how would you describe the internship to others?

The summer internship is an invaluable opportunity for law students to immerse themselves into the day-to-day hustle and bustle of a top tier Maltese law firm. The internship exposes students to the various facets of the profession – be it the excitement of being involved in a cutting edge deal, or the relatively slow-paced (but just as satisfying) process of researching a legal point which could unlock a stalemate in a litigious dispute. Even more importantly, however, Ganado Advocates’ summer internship will expose students to a dynamic group of lawyers keen on sharing their knowledge and years of experience in the field.

Can you recount an important lesson you learnt during your summer internship?

Probably the value of working in a team, and of building one’s identity as a budding lawyer by trying out different things. Another lesson would be to keep my voice down, but I’m still working on that!

Do you feel your summer experience helped you grow as a law student?

Without a doubt. I feel that experiencing some aspects of the job first-hand gave me added motivation and drive to see out the law course and to pursue a career at Ganado Advocates.

Did it facilitate your transition from a student to a lawyer?

Yes. I believe that the summer internship gave me the strong foundation and mettle required to pursue a career in the legal profession.

As an associate, do you feel the internship contributed to your career progression within the firm?

I would say so. By the end of the internship, embarking on Ganado Advocates’ trainee programme felt like the natural next step for my career progression. I completely bought in to the ethos of the firm and haven’t looked back since.

What advice would you give to our 2022 interns?

To make use of any and all opportunities to learn, to ask countless questions and to challenge yourselves constantly.
