The Academy of European Law will be hosting a live-streamed seminar to discuss the state of play on financial technology and innovation. EU and national regulators/supervisors, together with lawyers who work in financial services sectors or in private practice, are all invited to attend.

The seminar to be held on the 26th and 27th of March, will focus on how Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Big Data are transforming the scope of financial supervision and compliance. It will also look at the Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) and its legal implications for businesses, and lastly, on the regulation of virtual assets and their legal implications.

James Farrugia, a partner within GANADO Advocates will be giving an update on Security Tokens Offerings (STOs) and coin offerings by speaking on the evolution of cryptocurrencies, security tokens, digital and other virtual assets. He will also explain the challenges in regulating the offering and trading of virtual assets, as well as, the regulation of the crypto-issuers, by going in detail into the case of Facebook’s LIBRA.

He will also be part of a roundtable, discussing, the EU and national perspectives on virtual asset regulation. During this roundtable, the EBA and ESMA approaches to regulating ICOs, STOs and cryptoassets will be explored. Monetary policy especially those of central banks and virtual currencies will be analysed, together with the challenges and opportunities for legal practices.
